The probe body formed by the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital authorities to investigate the death of Rajshahi University fourth-year student MGM Shahriar failed to find any evidence of negligence by the doctors on October 19.
‘Shahriar died before he was brought to the hospital. So, there was no negligence in his treatment’, RMCH Director Brigadier General Shameem Yazdani said quoting a probe report submitted by a five-member committee recently.
Director Shameem Yazdani said that the committee also recommended exhuming the body of the deceased student for a fresh autopsy in order to know the real cause of his death.
‘The vandalism carried out by the RU students at the hospital following the death of Shahriar caused a loss of Tk. 30 lakh’, he said.
According to the hospital sources, RU students broke six to seven window glasses on the ground floor of the hospital’s administration building, and about half a hundred flower tubs.
They also overturned a sitting table of nurses in ward no. 8 after Shahriar was declared dead by the doctors.
In a reply, Shameem Yazdani said that the probe committee had learnt the prices of windows from the public works department officials and took their opinion in calculating the amount of losses.
Meanwhile, Gautam Kumar Paul, Deputy Director of the hospital, claimed that the amount of damages would increase as a lot of equipment was stolen on the day from the hospital.
‘There is a mini operation theatre inside ward no. 8 of the hospital. A lot of equipment from there was stolen after RU students vandalized the ward. The PWD officials do not know the actual cost of the medical equipment. Therefore, the amount of financial loss will be more’, he claimed.
Earlier, RU Marketing deptt fourth-year student MGM Shahriar( 25) was rushed to the RMCH as he fell off the corridor of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall of the university at about 8:00pm on October 19. He succumbed to the injuries at 9:30pm.
Alleging negligence in Shahriar’s treatment, his classmates started protesting and vandalising the hospital.
At that time, some intern doctors and hospital staff also beat up the protesting students, leaving five of them injured.
Following the incident, RMCH and RU authorities formed two probe bodies each to investigate the death of Shahriar.
RU public relation office Administrator Professor Pradip Kumar Panday informed that the probe body formed by the university authorities is yet to submit its report.
