Around 200 students from the Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) department at Rajshahi University (RU) staged a sit-in protest on Tuesday . The protest started around 8:45 am in front of their department at Rabindranath Tagore Bhaban, pressing for their four demands.
The primary demand is the resumption of their second-year second-semester exams, which were halted in mid-July during protests.
These exams were being supervised by Prof Mustak Ahmed, who was later suspended from academic duties. Despite the university reopening, the exams have not been rescheduled.
Another key demand is to hold the first-semester exams for second-year students, as many of them have been stuck in the same semester for nearly a year. This has caused delays in their academic progress.
The students also demand stronger action against Prof Mustak Ahmed. They believe the department has not taken enough steps to investigate the allegations of academic misconduct against him, despite his suspension.
Lastly, the students called for reducing session jams. They want all courses and exams to be completed within four months, as per the academic calendar, to avoid future delays in their studies.
Kamruzzaman Fahad, a student from the MCJ department, said, “We came here to study, but everything except study is happening. We will continue to protest until our demands are met.”
At the time of reporting, the protest was still ongoing.
