The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has taken a significant step towards making Dhaka a greener city by initiating a project to construct rooftop gardens and green walls in 33 government schools throughout the capital. This project aims to address the pressing issues of heat and carbon emissions in the city, which have been increasing due to urbanization and climate change.
The project is part of a broader effort funded by the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund, with the proposal being developed by Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. The primary objective is to create green spaces on the rooftops of these schools, which will help in mitigating the impact of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing the urban heat island effect.
Under this initiative, rooftop gardens and green walls will be established in 33 selected government schools in Dhaka. These green spaces are expected to provide multiple environmental benefits, including lowering temperatures in the surrounding areas, improving air quality, and promoting biodiversity.
To ensure the sustainability of these gardens, one staff member and five students from each of the selected schools will receive specialized training on maintaining the rooftop gardens. This hands-on training will equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for the plants and ensure their long-term survival. Additionally, each school will establish a Green Club, comprising students who will take an active role in managing and promoting the gardens. These clubs will also serve as a platform for raising awareness about environmental issues among the broader student community.
The DSHE has instructed the heads of the selected schools to provide all necessary support for the successful implementation of this project. By involving students and staff in this initiative, the DSHE hopes to instill a sense of environmental responsibility and stewardship in the younger generation.
This initiative is a part of the government's larger commitment to making Dhaka a more sustainable and livable city. The rooftop gardens and green walls are expected to serve as a model for other schools and institutions in the city, encouraging them to adopt similar green practices.
