A Rohingya robber has been killed in an alleged gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion(RAB) in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar. Weapons and ammunition including foreign pistols were recovered from the spot.
The RAB claimed that the deceased was the head of a Rohingya bandit force.
The incident took place in Damdamia hill area adjacent to Rohingya camp in Hnila union of Teknaf upazila on Thursday morning, said Wing Commander Azim Ahmed of RAB-15 Cox's Bazar Battalion.
The deceased was identified as NurulAlamNuru, 40. He is the head of NuruBahini, a Rohingya gang formed in his own name.
Wing Commander Azim Ahmed said a team of RAB had raided the Damdamia hill area adjacent to the Rohingya camp in Teknaf in the early hours of the morning with the intention of robbing and abducting some armed miscreants.
Upon reaching the spot, the miscreants sensed the presence and started firing at the RAB members. The RAB members also fired back in self-defense.
"At one stage, the miscreants retreated and found one person shot at the spot. Two RAB members were injured in the incident. A search of the spot later turned up one foreign pistol, one magazine, three home-made long guns and four bullets."
The RAB official said, "The injured were rescued and brought to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. At that time, the doctor on duty at the hospital declared the victim dead."
According to RAB, NurulAlamNuru is an identified robber. He formed a band of robbers under his own name and carried out various crimes including robbery, kidnapping, extortion, murder and drug trafficking in the surrounding areas including the Rohingya camps. There are several cases against him in Teknaf police station for being involved in these allegations.
The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, said Wing Commander Azim Ahmed.
