Robbery on fishing trawler in Bay of Bengal

A robbery was committed on a fishing trawler of Chhonua area of Banshkhali on Monday when it went for fishing in Bay of Bengal.

At least five fishermen and crew members of the fishing trawler were injured during the attack by the gang of robbers. The injured were identified as Md Hasan Nur, Abdul Jabbar, Md Ekhlas, Md Kalim Ullah and Abdul Jabbar.

They were admitted to Banshkhali Upazila Hospital on Tuesday morning.

Among the fishermen, Md Hasan Nur and Abdul Jabbar were critically injured. They were sent to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital.

Injured crew member Hasan Nur's younger brother, Syed Nur, reported that on Monday night, while casting nets for fishing in the sea, a gang of robbers suddenly surrounded the Bilkis fishing trawler with several boats. During the attack, the robbers beat up the 17 crew members on the Bilkis fishing trawler. The gang took away the trawler's belongings and money. Sources from Banshkhali Hospital said five injured fishermen were brought to the hospital and two of them were referred to Chattogram Medical College. Officer-in-Charge of Banshkhali Police Station said no one filed complaint regarding the incident. However, the procedure is to file case at the relevant police station in the area when robbery is committed at the sea.
