Detective Branch of Police arrested nine people in a raid in Patharghata of Barguna on Monday afternoon on charges of robbery in the deep sea.
Barguna Additional Superintendent of Police Muharram Ali led the operation. He arrested them and handed them over to Patharghata Police Station.
Halim Biswas, owner of a trawler in Satkhira, said that while fishing in Fairway Bay area in the Bay of Bengal on November 10, the robbers attacked them.
“Oil, mobiles, torchlights and goods worth about Tk 4 lakh. At that time, crewmembers of my boat were tied up while five people were beaten and seriously injured”, he added.
The detainees are identified as Ibrahim, Russell, Miraj, Belal, Sahajahan, Al Amin, Yasin, Miraj and Manju Mia. All of them live in different areas of Patharghata.
Officer-in-Charge of Patharghata Police Station Saeed Ahmed, said that several items including looted oil drums were recovered during the raid. An operation is underway to arrest the remaining culprits.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sadar Muharram Ali said 9 people were detained in a raid in different areas of Patharghata upazila on Sunday night. Attempts are being made to arrest the owner of the trawler and others involved.
