A gang of robbers kidnapped an eight-month-old baby girl after looting money and gold ornaments from a house at Azimpur Medical Staff Quarters in the capital on Friday morning.
Several teams of police are hunting down the robbers who decamped with Tk 1.5 lakh in cash and four bhoris of gold ornaments, sources said.
According to police and family sources, in the morning, a group of robbers entered the house of Farzana Akhtar, an employee of the Ministry of Home Affairs who lives in the staff quarters at Azimpur with her husband and a child.
Soon after the incident, a post featuring the image of the infant went viral on social media.
A colleague of Farzana made the post mentioning, “A robbery took place on Friday at my colleague Farzana’s house at Azimpur Staff Quarters near Lalbagh Tower. Besides valuables, the robbers (two male and a female) also kidnapped the baby.”
Being tipped off, the police rushed to the spot and examined the closed-circuit television footages.
The CC-TV footage shows that three males were entering the house and the lady was coming out from the house along with them, said the police.
Lalbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kasoinu told the Bangladesh Post that the police have started an investigation into the robbery and efforts are underway to rescue the child.
He said that without having valid documents, the family rented a room to an unknown woman on sublet.
“That woman who is on sublet is our main suspect. But, the housewife cannot provide us detailed information about the lady,” he said.
The OC said that both the housewife and the woman were present at the house during the incident.
“When the other accused knocked at the door, the woman opened the door. Entering the room, they tied the housewife and took away the baby along with other valuables,” he said.
The baby could not be rescued till filing of this report at 9:00 pm.
