A family suffering for three months

A family consisting of four members has been entering and leaving their house by swimming in a pond or using a raft made of banana trees to cross the pond for the last three months in Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district.

The victim's family could not find a way out of the house and is now using the government pond, as two groups of influential people have built bamboo fences surrounding their house following a dispute between the two groups, leaving no way to go out for the family members.

The victim, Entaj Ali of Udayshree village under Khelna Union in the upazila, has also filed a case with a Naogaon Court, seeking justice.

Sources said Entaj Ali, son of Rostam Ali of Udayshree village, is living with his two sons and wife. During the month of Ramadan this year, two rival groups -- Abdul Qayyum and Abdul Hai -- surrounded the roads on both sides of Entaz Ali's house with fences. Helpless Entaj Ali and his family members are now entering or leaving their house using the government pond in front of their house. The influential people, including Abdul Qayyum and Piara Begum, also attacked Entaj Ali's wife Motizan Bibi and broke her left knee on June 21 this year. Then, the locals admitted the injured to Naogaon Sadar Hospital. At that time, the victim complained that the attackers stole Tk 1 lakh, which the family got through the sale of paddy, from their house.

Admitting the attack, Azhar Ali's son Abdul Qayyum said, "I closed the road following the order of local member and chairman."

On the other hand, Samiul, son of the opponent Abdul Hai, said, "We surrounded the road on the instructions of the chairman-member as there is a dispute among them.”

Morsheda Khatun, the wife of local Saiful Islam, said Entaj Ali enters his house after swimming in the pond even at 12:00am at night and this is an inhuman act. “We, the villagers, also want justice for it,” she said.

Khelna Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Alhil Mahmud Chowdhury said, “We have made the roads for the movement of plaintiffs through the job creation programme from the Parishad. Neither I nor we blocked anyone's road. They themselves have done such act. We are not responsible for this.”
