Traffic laws are not being followed on the Chittagong-Rangamati highway, with vehicles frequently driving in the wrong direction, leading to road accidents and an increasing death toll.
Vehicles such as CNG-run auto rickshaws, rickshaws, motorcycles, vans, and small utility vehicles like Nasimon and Tomtom are frequently seen driving in the wrong direction on the Chittagong-Rangamati highway, creating significant safety concerns. During a visit to the highway, it was observed that locations like Jalil Nagar bus station and Munshir Ghat are particularly problematic, with pedestrians facing considerable difficulties due to vehicles openly violating traffic rules. Illegal parking along the highway further exacerbates congestion, creating additional hazards for both pedestrians and other motorists.
According to concerned citizens, these dangerous driving practices are among the primary causes of frequent accidents on the Chittagong-Rangamati highway. Many motorcycle and CNG auto-rickshaw drivers, in particular, choose to drive in the wrong direction rather than taking a U-turn to save time, thereby increasing the likelihood of collisions. These actions have led to a troubling rise in accident-related fatalities and severe injuries, with some victims facing lifelong disabilities. The Road Transport Act of 2018 explicitly prohibits wrong-way driving, stipulating that violators could face legal consequences, including a hefty fine of Tk 10,000.
Sub-Inspector Sirajul Islam of the Raozan Highway Police Station stated that they are conducting regular operations to enforce compliance with traffic laws and prevent vehicles from driving in the wrong direction. To address these violations, fines and legal actions are being imposed on offending drivers. Despite these efforts, the highway police are continuing to face challenges in securing public cooperation, but they remain committed to promoting safer road practices to reduce accidents and save lives.
