RMG workers block Dhaka-Ctg Highway demanding wages, bonus

Hundreds of garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Chandina upazila of Cumilla district on Friday morning, demanding their unpaid wages and Eid-ul-Azha bonuses.

The protest, which brought out by the workers of Denim Processing Plant, began at 11am caused a traffic jam stretching over 10 kilometers.

According to the local sources, the workers, frustrated with the delay in receiving their dues, took to the highway to press their demands. In response, the Chandina Upazila administration, highway police, district police, and industrial police engaged with the workers and called the factory owners to the scene.

Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jaber Md. Shoaib said on information, they reached the spot and contacted the factory owners who assured the workers that the wages and bonuses would be paid soon.

Following this assurance, the workers ended their protest.

Iliotganj Highway Police Station officer-in-charge Manjurul Alam confirmed the matter, adding that the traffic started to be normalizes after the blockade was lifted at 1pm, though it would take some time for the situation to return to normal completely.
