Syeda Rizwana Hasan, interim government’s adviser for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; has said that environment-friendly ACs, refrigerators as well as non-CFC inhalers should be used to protect the ozone layer. Technicians should also be aware of preventing the emission of harmful substances to the ozone layer, she added.
She made the comments while addressing a seminar at the Department of Environment (DoE) at Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday on the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which is also known as the World Ozone Day.
Speaking as the chief guest, Syeda Rizwana Hasan said, “Proper maintenance of the equipment we use is crucial for environmental protection. Protecting the ozone layer is an urgent to prevent skin cancer and cataracts; therefore, the global community must work together in this regard.”
She called upon women to be more aware as they often make decisions while purchasing refrigerators or air conditioners. She also noted that the media should play a role in creating public awareness.
She also spoke about building design. She emphasised that natural light should be a top priority in the design of new buildings. “In the future, buildings must be designed to facilitate natural light. We should design buildings so that artificial lighting is not needed during the day,” said Syeda Rizwana Hasan.
She also highlighted the impact of consumerism on quality of life, climate change and environmental degradation. She pointed out that both obesity and climate change pose serious threats to humanity.
“We fail to consider the consequences of our actions. We overlook harmful trends, mistaking them for progress,” she said.
At the event, prizes were distributed among the winners of a drawing competition.
