The water levels of rivers are increasing again in Moulvibazar due to heavy rains for the last few days although water in the houses of people in the Haor areas has receded after the recent floods in the district.
The water levels of the Kushiara and Juri rivers are flowing above the danger marks. If there is continuous rain like this, there will be danger of flooding of 3 lakh houses in the district again.
Meanwhile, the flood-affected people of low-lying and haor areas in Juri, Barlekha, Kulaura, Rajnagar and Sadar upazilas are still facing extreme sufferings day and night.
Sufferings of people are increasing at Bhati Shahpur village under Jaifarnagar Union on the bank of Hakaluki Haor in Juri Upazila. Nitya Biswas and Helal Mia, residents of Shahganj village on the bank of Hakaluki Haor, said water is still not coming down from the living rooms and cowsheds. They are keeping the cows after hanging awnings over the bridge and at others home. They also said that the damage to the house was more. Shahganj Bazar is near the Haor. The main road leading to the market is still under four to five feet of water.
Juri Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Mizanur Rahman said that 4,000 houses were damaged in Haor areas due to the flood. The water has not fully receded from the houses. After the water recedes, damage will increase further.
Abdur Rob, a resident of Kawadighi Haor area of Rajnagar, said the water in Hakaluki Haor will not subside and the flood situation will not fully improve until the Kushiara river water recedes.
Javed Iqbal, executive engineer of Moulvibazar Water Development Board, said due to heavy rains for the last two-three days, the water in the rivers is increasing again. The water levels of the Kushiara and Juri rivers are flowing above the danger marks.
He also said Manu river is flowing 7cm above the danger level at the Railway Bridge point and 14cm above the danger mark at Chandnighat point.
Dhalai river water is flowing 75cm below the danger level while Kushiara river is flowing 14cm above the danger mark at Sherpur point. The water of Juri river is flowing 179cm above the danger level.
