Riverbank protection and excavation works began at the junction of Jamuna and old Brahmaputra river of Erendabari Union under Fulchhari upazila of the district on Friday.
Local lawmaker Mahmud Hasan Ripon, who is also a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, inaugurated the works by dumping geo-textile bags at the junction as the chief guest.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) would implement the work under the Project on Development and Restoration of Navigability of Old Brahmaputra, Dharla, Tulai and Punarbhaba Rivers.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest said I would like to serve the people and I want to be a service provider for the people of my constituency as they elected me as a Member of Parliament (MP) of this area.
He also urged the concerned to do the project work properly and complete it timely without any criticism.
Newly-elected Upazila Chairman Abu Sayeed, Additional Chief Engineer of BIWTA and Project Director Saidur Rahman, Consultant Jahirul Haque, Executive Engineer Mohammad Mohshin Miah and local elite were present, among others, on the occasion.
