Newly appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Jhenaidah Mozibor Rahman wants to address some major issues in the district including suicide, river grabbing and law-order situation on priority basis to make the district a suitable and livable place for everyone.

The DC urged people from all walks of life to address the situation highlighting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been leading the country to make it a digitized one in the world.

The DC came up with the assertion in an exclusive interview with the Roving Correspondent of Bangladesh Post. He added that he had been informed that the people of suicide prone district Jhenaidah are very much honest, but emotional.

The DC said that he has already advised the Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) to raise awareness with the social leaders including the Imams of mosques and priests of temples to bring the suicide rates down.

In this initiative educational institution heads are considered as important figures as the major portion of the suicide victims belong to educational institutions. Union Parishad (UP) chairmen were also advised to conduct the similar awareness programmes in their respective villages. He had also put emphasis on application of law after the suicidal incidents.

The administrative officer had warned to show zero tolerance to the rivers and canals grabbers in the district. He said major portions of the rivers and canals were grabbed by a section of unscrupulous people in all the upazilas. Water bodies in Shailkupa and Moheshpur were badly engulfed by the grabbers narrowing the river beds day by day.

However, the navigability might be restored if proper government initiatives are taken. He had already talked to the ministry of water resources and Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Jhenaidah to ensure a suitable environment and bio-diversity conservation.

The DC further said that he will discuss the issue in the upcoming district law and order committee meeting and invite the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jhenaidah to improve the law and order situation in the district.

He also said, seizing of local weapons like Ramda (large size sword), Dhal (cane made protector), bamboo made Sarki, iron hooked Ballam etc. and motivation among common people will be done to ensure peace and tranquility in the society are mandatory.

Following the burning issue in the district regarding the plying of “Easy-bike”, the deputy commissioner said he has been discussing the matter with the SP, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Municipal Mayor and transport worker leaders for a meaningful discussion which will reduce the traffic congestions in the town.

To form a unity among the activists of various cultural organizations in the district, the district administrator said he was able to bring all the cultural organizations under the same umbrella where they could play more active role.
