In 1996, three bridges were constructed in Nikli upazila of Kishoreganj. However, after 26 years of construction, all three bridges are now vulnerable. Cracks appeared in the bridges long ago. However, as there is no alternative way, millions of people are moving through the bridge with risk and fear.
Despite repeated assurances from public representatives, there is no visible initiative to build a new bridge. Because of this, the affected residents have demanded that the bridges be renovated or new bridges constructed as soon as possible. The three bridges are the Moharkona-Kamalpur connection of Singpur Union of Nikli Upazila, Karpasha-Dampara Majlishpur Link Bridge of Karpasha Union and Kararbari Bridge of Nikli Sadar Union.
On the surface, it can be seen that the railings on both sides of the bridges are broken in many places. The inner rod has also come out from the lining of the pillar.
Again, the bridges are so narrow that even two auto-rickshaws cannot travel side by side.
Among them, a signboard has been hung from Nikli Upazila Engineer's office on the Moharkona-Kamalpur connection bridge of Dampara Union. However, heavy vehicles are constantly moving through the dangerous bridges.
Meanwhile, as the bridges have been in disrepair for a long time, lakhs of people including school, college, madrasa students and common people of those three unions are moving at risk.
Local residents say that the Moharkona-Kamalpur bridge in Singpur Union has been dangerous for a long time. Major accidents can happen at any time. For this reason, prohibition signs have been given on the side of the bridge. Accidents can occur at any time due to the way vehicles with heavy goods are moving through such dilapidated bridges.
However, when asked to know, Md. Amirul Islam, Executive Engineer of Kishoreganj Local Government Engineering Department, said, "A proposal has been sent for the construction of Karpasha-Dampara Majlishpur connection bridge of Karpasha Union and Kararbari Bridge of Nikli Sadar Union. Hopefully, we will be able to finish the work of these three bridges very soon.
Md. Amirul Islam said that the soil test is going on for the construction of the bridge. The work of Moharkona-Kamalpur connection bridge of Singpur Union will start within two-three months.
