Police arrested a ringleader of kidnapping gang, who is also accused in seven cases, from Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on early Sunday.
The arrestee was identified as Md Badruddoza aka Badruz, 45, son of Maolana Sultan Ahmed, resident of Uttar Shilkhali area under Baharchara union in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Firearms, ammunition and locally made weapon were also seized from his possession at that time.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Gias Uddin confirmed the matter at a press conference held at Teknaf Police Station on Sunday afternoon.
He has over seven cases filed against him in Teknaf police station, including charges of robbery, kidnapping, extortion, and murder.
Gias Uddin said that, police received information that Badruddoza, with arms, was hiding at a casuarina forest in Uttar Shilkhali area under Baharchara union and planning to commit crime there. When the police went there, they noticed 3 to 4 suspicious individuals who were attempting to flee the area. After chasing them, one person was arrested while the others escaped.
Following the arrested individual's confession, we found three locally made guns, three rounds of ammunition, two machetes, one cleaver, and one Chinese axe hidden in a pile of firewood in front of a house owned by a man named Jalil, located in Uttar Shilkhali area, the OC added.
The OC further said, Badruddoza is a notorious criminal and the ringleader of a kidnapping gang. He formed his own group and carried out various crimes in the hilly areas of Teknaf.
Recently, he was involved in the kidnapping of a doctor named Zahir in Baharchara union and 11 farmers in Whykong union, from whom he demanded ransom before releasing them.
A case was filed against the arrested individual under relevant laws at Teknaf Police Station, confirmed Mohammad Gias Uddin.
