Rich tributes paid to Bangabandhu

National Mourning Day observed across the country with elaborate programmes

The National Mourning Day was observed across the country on Saturday with paying rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 45th martyrdom anniversary.

Like previous years, the government, ruling Awami League and different political and socio-cultural organisations, educational institutions and professional groups have chalked out elaborate programmes across the country to pay the utmost respect to the greatest son of the soil on the day of his martyrdom. Our correspondents sent news items on the issue. 

In Myemensingh, on the occasion of the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the administration of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University organised a mourning rally and laid a wreath at the sculpture of Bangabandhau on the campus, reports Titly Das, our JKKNIU Correspondent. 

The national flag was hoisted at half-mast and the black flag was hoisted in front of the administrative building at 11:00 am.  Later, the mourning rally came out from there and encircled various roads of the university. After laying a wreath at the sculpture of Bangabandhu, a brief discussion meeting was held.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Dr AHM Mostafizur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Md.  Sahab Uddin, Registrar (in charge) Md  Humayun Kabir, Proctor  Ujjwal Kumar Prodhan, heads of various departments, president of the teachers' association and the council of officers, the general secretary were present at the time. 

In Kishoreganj, the national and party flags were kept at half-mast in the district Awami League office and wreaths were placed at the portrait of Bangabandhu, reports our Kishoreganj CorrespondentA meeting was held in the District Collectorate conference room. Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarowar Murshed Chowdhury presided over the meeting.

It was addressed among others by District Awami League President Advocate Karmul Ahasan Shajahan, its General Secretary Advocate M A Afzal, Zila Parished Chairman Md. Zillur Rahman, Police Super Masrukur Rahman Khaled BPM (Bar), Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman, Kishoreganj Municipality Mayor Md. Pervaz Miah, Public Prosecutor Shah Azizul Hoque, Former Freedom Fighter Commander Md. Asad Ullah, District Awami League Joint Secretary Advocate Syed Ashfaqul Islam Titu, District Mohila Awami League General Secretary Bilkis Begum. Special prayers were offered in mosques, temples and other religious institutions.

In Mongla, the national flag and port flag were hoisted at half-mast at various institutes at the sunrise, prayer ceremonies were held in the mosque and planting a litchi sapling in front of the port building a tree planting campaign was inaugurated as part of their month-long programme marking the day, report our Mongla Correspondent and Khulna Bureau.

Moreover, a discussion meeting was held in the meeting room of Mongla Port Authority under the chairmanship of Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan. Later, a documentary film titled "Our Bangabandhu" was screened on Bangabandhu's biography.

In Jhenaidah, the district administration, political parties and Jhenaidah Press Club arranged separate programmes to mark the day, reports our Roving Correspondent. 

Jhenaidah district administration bought out a mourning rally in  the town. Later, they offered floral wreaths at the mural of Bangabandhu.

Juba League arranged discussion, doa mahfil and mass feeding for the common people in front of the Old DC Court. 

Jhenaidah-2 MP Tahjib Alam Siddiquee Somi attended the event as chief guest. Discussion meeting of Jhenaidah Press Club was held at the conference room with its president M Raihan in the chair. 

In Narail, marking the day, the district administration chalked out elaborate programmes that included hoisting of national flag at half mast, placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, art competition, prize giving ceremony, doa and milad mahfil, reports our Regional Correspondent, Jashore.

Chairman of Narail Zila Parishad Advocate Shorab Hossain Biswas, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anjuman Ara, Police Super Md. Jashim Uddin, district Awami League secretary and Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman Nizam Uddin Khan Nilu, Mayor of Narail Municipality Md Jahangir Biswas, Secretary of Narail Press Club Shamimul Islam Tulu and others paid homage to Bangabandhu by placing wreaths at his portraits at Old Bus Terminal and District Shilpakala Ccademy premises.

Narail Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital arranged doa and milad mahfil and discussion in observance the day. Apart from it, the AL, district unit and its associate organisations also observed the day amid different programmes.

In Chuadanga, the ruling Awami League and its front bodies, district administration, upazila administrations, educational institutes, socio-cultural organisations chalked out various programmes marking the day, reports our Chuadanga Correspondent. 

The programmes include placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu and Bangamata, hoisting national flag, special monajat, cultural competitions, milad mohfils, painting competitions and discussion.

Nazrul Islam Sarker, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chuadanga, along with other executive magistrates and staffs put wreaths to murals of Bangabandhu and Bangamata on the premises of DC office in the morning. 

District Administration arranged singing competition, poem recitation competition, essay writing competition, quiz competition through virtual system. Deputy Commissioner Nazrul Islam Sarker distributed prizes among the winners. 

In Satkhira, the day was observed through various programmes organised by Satkhira Zila Parishad under the chairmanship of Zila Parishad Chairman Nazrul Islam, reports our Satkhira Correspondent.  

Former Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhul Haque, MP, paid homage to Bangabandhu marking the day by laying a wreath at his mural at the Zila Parishad premises in the morning.

Later, trees were planted, prayers were held asking forgiveness of Bangabandhu's soul, and food was distributed among 700 orphans in different orphanages on behalf of the district council.

In Kushtia, the National Mourning Day was observed on the campus of Islamic University with due respect. Marking the day, the university VC Prof Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari hoisted the national flag at half-mast while Pro-VC Prof Dr M Shahinoor Rahman hoisted the black flag atop of the university administration building around 10:00 am, reports our IU Correspondent

Later, the IU authorities placed floral wreath at the feet of ‘Mrittunjoyee Mojib’ near the main entrance area led by VC. Teachers Association, Officers Association, Shapla Forum, halls, various departments, rebel group of IU BCL unit also gave floral wreaths here while university authorities arranged a tree plantation programme near main entrance area and daa mahfil at central mosque on the campus after Zohor prayers.

Meanwhile, Bangabandhu Parishad placed floral wreath separately led by its president Prof Dr Mahbubur Rahman and secretary Prof Dr Mahbubul Arfin. 

In Lakshmipur, people of the district observed the day through various programs including Quran recitation,  wreath laying, mourning rallies, discussion meetings, poetry recitation, compositions, painting competitions and exhibitions, reports our Lakshmipur Correspondent.

In the morning, wreaths were laid at the Collectorate building on the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by Deputy Commissioner Anjan Chandra Pal, Superintendent of Police HM Kamruzzaman, District AL unit President Golam Faruk Pinku and others. 

Later, a mourning meeting was held at the Collectorate building premises under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Saifuzzaman Bhuiyan. Thousands of people from different walks of life  League took part in these separate programs following hygiene rules.

In Pabna, the day was observed with due respect like all over the country. The Ishwardi upazila administration, Awami League and its front, various government and non-government educational institutions and social organizations paid homage to Bangabandhu by placing flowers before his portrait, reports our Ishwardi Correspondent. 

People from all walks of life, including party leaders, have been flocking to AL office at Station Road in Ishwardi town and to Bangabandhu Square of the Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute since morning wearing mourning badges on their clothes. 

Acting President of Upazila AL unit Naib Ali Biswas, Vice President of Pabna District AL unit and Chairman of Ishwardi Upazila Nuruzzaman Biswas as well as leaders of different levels came to the Awami League party office to pay their respects to Bangabandhu.

In Bogura, leaders and activists of district Awami League and its front organisations hoisted national, party and black flags, laid wreaths before Bangabandhu’s portrait in front of the party office on Temple Road in the morning on the occasion.

At the initiative of the district administration, Deputy Commi­ssioner Ziaul Haque, Superintendent of Police Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan, District Council Chairman Dr Maqbool Hossain and others laid wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Mujib Mancha in Satmatha of the town. 

Meanwhile, Bogura Press Club President Mahmudul Alam Nayan, General Secretary Arif Rehman and others spoke at the discussion meeting held at the Press Club on the day.

Ragebul Ahsan Ripu, General Secretary of the district AL unit, inaugurated a three-day exhibition on Bangabandhu at the Shukra Community Center with artist 

­Pranab Sarkar.

Ragebul Ahsan Ripu was also the chief guest at the discussion meeting organized by Bogura District Motor Owners Group at Charmatha Central Bus Terminal where he distributed Bangabandhu's books 'Karagarer Rojnamcha' and ‘Ashamapto Atmajibani' among students.
