Rice was distributed among the destitute fishermen of Sujanagar municipality under humanitarian assistance programme, who are currently refrained from catching hilsa from the Padma river near Sujanagar upazila of Pabna.
A 22-day ban on hilsa fishing started from October 13 across the country for the conservation of mother hilsa. These fishermen are not allowed to catch hilsha during this period. The rice was distributed among these fishermen so that they do not face hardship due to the ban.
The rice distribution program was inaugurated at Sujanagar municipality office on Saturday. Executive Officer of Sujanagar Municipality Golam Nabi, Upazila Assistant Fisheries Officer Saiful Islam, Municipal Sanitary Inspector Amirul Islam, and Conservancy Inspector Hasan Uddin and others were present at that time.
Municipality Executive Officer Golam Nabi said according the instruction of Sujanagar Municipality Administrator and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mir Rasheduzzaman Rashed, 25 kg of rice was distributed to each of the 130 fishermen belonging to Sujanagar Municipality.
Upazila Fisheries Officer Nur Kazmir Zaman Khan said, this year, rice will be distributed among 1,250 fishermen in Bhayna, Manikhat, Satbaria, Nazirganj, and Sagorkandi unions located along the Padma River near Sujanagar upazila and Sujanagar municipality.
