Rice, chicken dearer

The prices of rice, chicken, eggs and vegetables have recently gone up in the kitchen markets of the city. However, the price of onion has come down. The prices of other products have been seen to remain somewhat unchanged.

After visiting several kitchen markets in the city on Friday it was observed that the price of most of the vegetables in the market has increased by 5 to 10 taka per kg. Per kg tomatoes were being sold at Tk 130, Barbati at Tk 80, beans at Tk 50-60, round eggplant at Tk 60, long eggplant at Tk 50 taka, cabbage at Tk 50 per piece, bitter gourd at Tk 60 taka, carrots at Tk 60 taka per kg, rice pumpkin pieces Tk 40, pointed gourd Tk 50, radish Tk 40-50 taka and papaya Tk 40 per kg.

Kalam, a vegetable seller at Mirpur 11 market said the vegetable prices are higher even in the winter season. Prices have gone up due to low supply of vegetables in the market. Normally the prices of vegetables remain low during winter but this year the prices have gone up due to the flashfloods and poor supply.

Potato price has come down in almost all the markets. New potatoes were being sold at Tk 25-30 per kg. Onion prices have come down during the week. Onions are being sold at Tk 50-55 per kg.

Garlic is being sold at the same price as last week. China garlic was being sold for Tk 150. Home grown garlic is being sold at Tk 50-60 taka per kg and local ginger at Tk 60-75 per kg. Chinese ginger is being sold for Tk 140 taka.

In these markets, green chillies were being sold at Tk 70 per kg. Four pieces of green banana was being sold at Tk 30. Cucumber was being sold at Tk 60 taka. Four pieces of lemon were being sold at Tk 20-25.

Dried chillies were being sold at Tk 150-250 per kg. Turmeric was being sold at Tk 160-220 per kg. The price of home grown pulse has gone up being sold at 110 per kg. Last week the price stood at 100 taka per kg. Indian pulses are being sold at Tk 90 per kg.

In these markets, the retail price of edible oil is Tk 160 per liter. One liter of oil of various brands is also being sold in the market at Tk 160.

Sugar is being sold at Tk 80 per kg in the market. However, packed sugar of one kg was being sold at Tk 85. Flour was sold at 35 taka per kg on Friday.

The price of eggs has increased in the market. Dozens of red eggs are being sold at Tk 105-110. Dozens of duck eggs are being sold for Tk 180. Dozens of Sonali chicken eggs are being sold for Tk 150.

Regarding the egg prices, Mohammad Kader, a seller in the Paltan kitchen market said the price has gone up due to low supply of eggs.

“If the supply increases, the price will be decreased again,” he said.

The price of chicken has increased in the city markets. The price of broiler chicken has been increased by Tk 10 to15 and stood at Tk 175 per kg. Sonali chicken was being sold at Tk 280 taka. The price of Sonali chicken was Tk 260 last week. Layer chicken was being sold at Tk 230 per kg on Friday.

Mohammad Rasel, a chicken seller in the same market, said that the price of chicken has gone up due to the syndicates. Moreover, the demand has also increased due to the New Year and Christmas Day.

The price of rice has also increased in the markets. The price of Miniket rice has increased by Tk 3-4 per kg and stood at Tk 63-65 per kg, while the price of ‘Atash’ rice has been increased by Tk 1-2 per kg. The rice is being sold at 50 taka per kg. A week ago, it was 47-48 taka per kg.
