Since Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister amidst the anti-discrimination student movement, the atmosphere within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been markedly tense. The majority of the 25 directors, including the current president Nazmul Hasan, have gone into hiding.
Opposition organisers have been frequenting the BCB headquarters almost daily, staging marches and chanting slogans. Today, a group of cricket organisers, led by former joint secretary of the board Rafiqul Islam Babu, visited the BCB.
Chief Executive Nizam Uddin Chowdhury has issued a verbal demand for the resignation of the current board of directors. Rafiqul Islam Babu stated, “Many directors are currently out of the country, having fled. Those who remain should resign. A director’s position becomes vacant if they miss three consecutive board meetings, leading to a quorum crisis. It would be simpler if they resigned in accordance with the constitution. We do not wish to violate ICC rules. Our demand for resignation is within the legal framework.”
Debbrato Pal, General Secretary of the Cricketer’s Association QUAB and match referee, commented, “Cricket is a gentleman’s game, and everything should be conducted with decorum. There may be much to say, but we prefer not to voice it.”
He added, “Bangladesh cricket has not progressed as expected over the past two decades. We are significantly lagging behind.”
