DU celebrates birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman has said that the relevance of the rebellious poem of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam written a hundred years ago is endless. The significance of Nazrul's poetry can be found in all spheres of society from age to age. That is why the national poet Nazrul's poem 'Rebel' is timeless. He said this while addressing a memorial meeting on the occasion of the 123rd birth anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. This year's theme of the birth anniversary is 'Centenary of the Rebels'.

On the occasion of the 123rd birth anniversary of the national poet, teachers, students, officials and staff of the university, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Akhtaruzzaman, gathered at the foothills of invincible Bengal in the morning, marched to the grave of the poet, laid wreaths and recited Fateha. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of the University Prof. Dr. Muhammad Samad, Treasurer Prof. Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Registrar Prabir Kumar Sarkar, General Secretary of Dhaka University Teachers Association Prof. Dr. Md. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan and Proctor Prof. Dr. AKM Golam Rabbani among others were present on the occasion. . After paying their respects, a memorial meeting and cultural program was held at the poet's mausoleum premises under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman said the position of poet, writer, essayist, storyteller, musician and writer Kazi Nazrul is eternal and unique. He is best known for his philosophy of literature, poetry and song. So he is sometimes a poet of equality, sometimes a poet of love, sometimes a poet of secularism and harmony and sometimes a rebellious poet.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that Nazrul's poems and songs give us strength and inexhaustible inspiration to speak out against exploitation, oppression, discrimination and subjugation.

The Vice-Chancellor further said that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has played a pivotal role in establishing Nazrul as a national poet by bringing him from India to Bangladesh. Therefore, Bangabandhu's contribution to honor the national poet is undeniable.
