The regional round of the Mathematics Olympiad will take place across the country, sponsored by the AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation and the Bangladesh Mathematics Association, beginning on Friday. The objective is to pique young people's interest in mathematics education and give students from different areas a stage on which to perform.
In five regions this year—Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, and Sylhet—the regional phase started at the same time. The event was held at Jagannath University's mathematics department in Dhaka South, under the direction of Professor Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam, the department chairman of Dhaka University.
Similar to this, Md. Kabir Hossain, vice-chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet, presided over the opening of the Olympiad. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shirin Akhtar was present at the Chittagong Region Olympiad, which took place at the mathematics department of Chittagong University.
At Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, under the direction of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mihir Ranjan Halder, Khulna hosted its regional Olympiad. Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Ali was the main guest at Patuakhali University of Science and Technology, where the Barisal Region Olympiad was taking place.
Vibrant demonstrations took place on campus to commemorate the first ceremonies, which were followed by exams from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The closing sessions, commencing at 2:30 PM, featured renowned mathematicians engaging in Q&A sessions. Later, the results were announced, and prizes were distributed to the deserving winners.
The competition kicked off earlier in Dhaka North, Rajshahi, and Rangpur regions on February 9, marking the beginning of an exhilarating journey for mathematics enthusiasts. The journey will culminate in the final phase of the National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad, scheduled to take place at the Mathematics Department of Dhaka University on April 26.
This final round will witness the participation of the top 10 contestants from each region, totaling 80 contestants. The finalists will vie for certificates, crests, and cash prizes, showcasing their exceptional mathematical prowess on a national platform.
