State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has urged everyone to refrain from flying kites around the power lines.

The state minister made the call on his verified Facebook page.

Nasrul Hamid said, "Refrain from flying kites around the power lines. It may often lead to accidents. Power outages are occurred due to flying kites. Be aware of the matter for yourself and others.”

Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) has also been made the call through a public noti

fication.  The notice said in the form of a slogan, “Avoid flying 'kites' near power lines, stay safe from unwanted power outages and loss of life and property.”

The statement further said, “Recently, there has been a trend of kite flying among people in different parts of the country. These kites of different sizes, big and small, often get stuck in the high voltage power towers and wires while flying or tearing the yarn. The kites and yarn, which stuck in 400 kV, 230 kV and 132 kV transmission lines spread across different parts of the country, can cause power outages due to wet short circuit in storms. In addition, if the yarn is in contact with the electric wire while it is wet and the yarn is lying in the populated area, there is a danger of unintended loss of life and property due to electrification. This fear is increasing in the ongoing ‘Kalbaishakhi’ or nor’wester season all over the country.

“Therefore, everyone is requested to refrain from flying kites near power lines, substations and towers,” according to the statement of PGCB.
