Redigging of Mohon canal begings

5610 Chitolmari farmers to reap benefits

The re-digging work of Mohon canal in Sontoshpur Union of Chitolmari Upazila has started. Netherlands Embassy has supported financially under Water Resource Management Project. Solidaridad Net Asia and Uttaran, two NGOs jointly took the inititive of the canal re-digging work.

A discussion was arranged marking the start of the work at Umajuri Giringgi Point. Upazila Parishad Chairman Ashok Kumar Boral inaugurated the canal re-digging work in presence of locals. Chairman Ashok Kumar Boral said, “According to the guideline of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we will recover all filled and grabbed canals so that not an inch of land remains uncultivated.” 

Solidaridad Net Asia Senior Programmer Agriculturist Dr SM Ferdous said, “We all have to take care of the canal after its re-digging.” He also added that 1122 farmers directly and 5610 famers indirectly will get irrigation and other facilities for their crop lands from the canal.  Micro-Water Shed Committee President Noni Gopal Gorami presided over the progrmme. Agriculturist Sifat Al-Maruf said that irrigation facility will be avaiable now.  Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer agriculturist Md Asaduzzaman said that there is no alternative to canal re-digging and new canal digging is a must for pisciculture.  Among others, Uttar Upazila Officer Tondra Mondal, Water Cluster Fascinator Ismail Hossain, Diponkar Mondal and Ashtosh, were present in the programme.
