Red cabbage farming gaining ground in Naogaon

Published : 11 Feb 2023 09:10 PM

Red Cabbage is being cultivated for the first time in Naogaon district. Farmer Panna Banu of Bishnupur village of Badalgachi in Naogaon has succeeded in cultivating this foreign vegetable. His vegetables are being sold at two to three times higher prices in the market. People from the surrounding area come to see his colorful cabbage fields every day. Badalgachi Upazila is famous for vegetable cultivation. In this Upazila, vegetables are grown on hundreds of bighas of land, but only Panna Banu is successful in red cabbage cultivation. Because she is the only one who has cultivated this cabbage for the first time in the district.

Panna Banu said, they have a small portion of land next to the house. They used to cultivate rice in that land. Potatoes and mustard were grown occasionally as intermediate crops. Now a worker of Moushumi NGO told her about red cabbage cultivation on that land. If they agree to grow red cabbage, seeds and fertilizers are provided from that NGO. The rules of farming are also taught by the NGO people. Inspired by their words, she sowed one and a half thousand red cabbage seeds on the land. At the end of three months after sowing, Panna Banu is eating red purple cabbage. For two weeks, Abu Bakr, Panna's husband, has been selling colorful cabbages.

She also said that the seeds were given by them as the seasonal NGO's exhibition was eaten. Some fertilizer is also given. Some more have been removed from the market. Besides, little pesticides are needed to grow red cabbage. In all, about 5 thousand Tk have been spent so far. About 6 thousand cabbages are being sold for a few days. If such a price is found, red cabbage worth about 20,000 Tk will be sold. Saiful Islam of Goborchampa village, who came to see the cabbage field, said that he came to see the red cabbage field after hearing from one of the villagers. I also want to grow this new variety of cabbage.

That's why I came to see its cultivation. Cabbage looks so good because it is colorful. Abu Bakkar, Panna's husband, said, usually a green-white block copy is being sold in the current market for Tk 10-15. There, each colored cabbage of their food is being sold for 40-50 taka. All red-purple cabbages are gone shortly after they are brought to market.

Mahmudul Hasan Arif, Agriculture Officer of Private Development Organization Moushumi said, Moushumi is working to make the poor people self-reliant under the Integrated Agriculture Unit Project with the financial support of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). The main objective of this project is to encourage farmers to grow new and high-yielding varieties of vegetables and fruits from 2021. For this purpose seeds and seedlings of high yielding varieties of vegetables and fruits have been distributed to 142 farmers so far. Besides these farmers are also given training by their organization.

Badalgachi Upazila Agriculture Officer Sabab Farhan said that under the guidance of the government, the agriculture department is working with the aim of spreading new information technology related to agriculture.

A private organization named Moushumi has experimentally supported a farmer named Panna Banu in red cabbage cultivation. It is a very commendable work.

The success of Panna Banu will increase the number of colorful cabbage farmers next year. And colorful cabbage is in high demand in the market as it is nutritious and delicious to eat.
