Eight commercial foreign ships docked at Mongla port in the month of April, 24, which is a record for the second-largest seaport of the country since its inception, says a MPA Press release on Monday.
The Mongla Port Authority says the port is now abuzz with economic activities. The authorities also referenced the government measures to enhance the port's capacity and navigability. The commercial vessels that anchored at the port jetty this month are Liberian flag carrier Maersk Hai Phong, Singaporean flag carrier Kota Tenaga, MV Kota Rancak, MV Maersk Villa D Vostok, MV Maerks Queen, MV Maersk Chattagram and MV Maersk Dhaka. Of the vessels Liberian flag carrier Maersk Hai Phong anchored at the jetty two times in the month, the press release said.
The vessels carried fabrics, machinery, apples, cycle parts, electrical goods, white clinkers, fertilizers, calcium carbonate, copper cathodes, jute, jute goods, shrimps, cargos, white fish, clay tiles, dried fish, garment products, cotton yard which have been imported and exported as well.
Of the moored vessels, one ship was docked twice while carrying import and export goods.
Mongla Port Authority said Mongla Port is improving gradually thanks to the government's numerous measures and steps implemented by the port authority. The number of both local and foreign commercial vessels to the port is on the rise. Earlier, larger ships were not able to anchor at Mongla port jetty due to the navigability crisis of the Pasur River. Capital dredging has resolved the anchoring issue.
Deputy Director (Board and Public Relation) of the Mongla Port Authority Md Makruzzaman, said the seaport is a beacon of hope for the country's economy.
He said the government has completed more than 55 development projects, including 14 to enhance the port's capacity. Port usage is increasing by about 20% per year.
