In 2013, the collapse of Rana Plaza in Savar resulted in the tragic deaths of many garment workers. 17 days after the disaster, a worker named Reshma was found alive and rescued from the rubble. This incredible event inspired director Nazrul Islam Khan to start making the film "Rana Plaza" that same year. The film features Pori Moni as Reshma and Symon Sadiq as Tittu.
The movie quickly grabbed the attention of viewers but faced problems with the censor board. In 2014, Nazrul appealed to the High Court after the film was initially denied certification. Even though it was given clearance on July 11, 2015, the screening was banned again on August 24, just one day before its release in theaters. This situation deeply affected Nazrul, leading to a mental breakdown and a stroke. He lost hope of ever seeing his film released. However, with a new interim government now in power, the director has regained hope. He believes that his film will finally get the approval it needs.
Nazrul plans to resubmit "Rana Plaza" to the censor board next week after completing the required paperwork. He shared with Kaler Kantho, "I have tried many times over the past decade, but my film has not received approval. The board members watched it with me, praised it, and even cried. Yet, the next day, I was told that a higher authority had blocked its clearance."
Nazrul remains optimistic, as he feels that the current situation in the country allows people to speak more freely. He is confident that his film will be released without any more obstacles.
Ali Akram Shuvo composed the music for "Rana Plaza," with songs by Runa Laila, Andrew Kishore, Imran, and others. The film was produced by MA Multimedia House.
