Attorney General (AG) AM Amin Uddin on Wednesday said that raising any question over the election of MohammadShahabuddin as the 22nd President of Bangladesh is unwarranted. This election is completely legitimate and legal, he said.

He made this comment in response to questions from reporters at his office in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Replying to a question on whether the post of President is an office of profit the Attorney General said that the post of President is not an office of profit. Such a question after the election of MohammadShahabuddin is unwarranted, he said adding that the presidential election is completely legal and there should be no question about it.

The Attorney General said that a lawyer had filed a writ when Justice Sahabuddin Ahmed became president saying that the post of president is an office of profit. After hearing that writ, the High Court clearly made several announcements, one of which is that the President is not an officer appointed to a position of profit.

He also said that if we go through the Articles 48, 66 and 147 of the Constitution, we would see that the post of president does not fall under the category of lucrative post in any way. The President is by no means a person engaged in the government job.

It should be noted that election commissioner Md. Alamgirsaid  despite being a former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) MohammadShahabuddinhas no legal bar to become president of the country. The commissioner also said that the post of president cannot be said to be profitable.

On Tuesday, February 14, EC Alamgir said this in response to questions from reporters at his office in the capital's AgargaonElectionBhaban.  EC Alamgir'scomment brought an end to that debate.

Earlier on February 13, as a single candidate for the post of President, Bangladesh Awami League candidate and former anti-corruption commissioner MohammadSahabuddin was elected president unopposed.
