Rain relieves Dhaka’s heat, but creates road woes

Dhaka experienced 26 mm of rain by 9 AM on Wednesday, providing much-needed relief from a week of scorching heat. However, the downpour caused significant challenges for commuters.

Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that rain fell across much of the country. “The rain intensified after 9 AM and is expected to continue throughout the day,” he noted. The forecast indicates that rain will persist into Thursday as well.

Residents shared their experiences. Samia Rahman, who commutes from Mirpur to Old Dhaka, said, “I got drenched after getting off the metro rail. While the heat has eased, I’m worried about getting sick.” Another commuter, Ayon Rahman, was caught off guard. “I didn’t expect rain and wasn’t carrying an umbrella. Now I’m soaked.”

In terms of flooding, no significant waterlogging was reported in areas like Shahbagh, Farmgate, Banglamotor, and Mirpur-10. However, some water accumulation was noted in Jahangir Gate.

The rain has varied in intensity throughout the morning, leaving many pedestrians scrambling for cover. Mohammad Didar, a tea vendor in Mirpur-12, expressed frustration: “The rain has ruined my day. Usually, people gather around my stall, but today it’s quiet.”

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s bulletin warns of light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds across various divisions, including Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Chattogram. The forecast predicts moderately heavy to very heavy showers in some areas.

Daytime temperatures may drop by 2 to 5 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures could fall by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius nationwide.
