Rain curtailed the first day of the second Test between Bangladesh and India at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Friday, sparing the visitors from significant damage.
A mere 35 overs were bowled, with Bangladesh reaching 107 for the loss of three wickets. Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 40 and 13, respectively.
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh lost both openers, Zakir Hasan (0) and Shadman Islam (24), to Indian pacer Akash Deep before lunch.
In the post-lunch session, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (31). However, only nine overs were possible in this session due to bad light, and eventually, heavy rain forced the abandonment of play for the day.
Thus, on the first day of the second Test in Kanpur, Bangladesh stood at 107 for three after 35 overs, with Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim still at the crease on 40 and 13, respectively.
India, leading the two-match series 1-0, opted to field under overcast skies. Fast bowler Akash Deep justified captain Rohit Sharma's decision by claiming two wickets in the first hour.
He dismissed openers Zakir Hasan, who was caught for a duck, and Shadman Islam, trapped lbw for 24, with his seaming deliveries to the left-handers.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 31, partnered with Mominul to add 51 runs, navigating through the remainder of the first session. However, post-lunch, Ravichandran Ashwin, the hero of the first match, broke the partnership.
Off-spinner Ashwin, who had scored a century and taken six wickets in India's opening win, trapped Najmul lbw with a turning delivery from around the wicket. The hosts remained unchanged, fielding three seamers who consistently troubled the opposition batsmen, with numerous deliveries beating the bat.
