A quarantine centre made by livestock department in Cumilla Bibirbazar Land Port has not been operational for 5 years after its establishment. Due to the dormant state of this quarantine centre, businessmen and people in the area are worried about the condition of the equipment in the building.
C&F agents of Bibirbazar Land Port said that the Livestock Department on 2016 established a quarantine centre beside this land port to examine and control the quality of cattle, chicken, meat, egg, cattle feed and other food items imported from India. Needed equipment was also brought to run this centre properly.
This two-story building has the quarantine centre at the ground floor and dormitory at the second floor. Two employees with their families now live at the dormitory.
Establishment of this centre created a massive interest among the businessmen in the area. This centre had the capability to detect diseases of cattle, finding the counterfeit products and examine the quality of food products, people in the area said.
However, businessmen in the area are now disappointed as even after 5 years, the quarantine centre has not been operational yet. As the equipment has not been used for 5 years, the quality of the equipment is now raising questions, they added.
Upon asking, Deputy Director of Cumilla Livestock Department Nazrul Islam said that due to lack of manpower, the centre is not operational yet. However, two employees have been appointed to take care of the building and they are currently living at the dormitory.
Chances of the equipment being damaged are very unlikely as they are properly packed and have not been opened yet.
