Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday called for raising social movement against drug abuse, corruption and food adulteration, reports BSS.
“Social movement is needed against drug abuse as it has been eroding our social norms and values like tsunami, while adulteration in food is widespread and corruption also takes place here like other countries of the world.
“We have to control such problems unitedly,” he told a program organized by Dhaka University Sociology Department Alumni Association (DUSAA) at Dhaka University’s TSC auditorium.
About the upcoming Dhaka city corporation elections, Quader said the government of Sheikh Hasina is determined to make the elections free, fair and credible.
“Unfortunately those who are beating around the bush before the polls saying the election will not be free and fair are likely conceding defeat ahead of the election,” he said.
“To keep our pledge, the government will provide all out cooperation to the Election Commission (EC)”, Quader added.
Referring to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he said Bangladesh has secured top position in Asia with 8.15 percent GDP growth. It was possible due to the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who has already made the country free from stigma by hanging the war criminals and punishing the killers of Bangabandhu, he added.
Quoting Winston Churchill “Politicians think about next election and the statesman thinks about next generation”, Quader said Hasina took Bangladesh in a unique position through tremendous development and she became a statesman as she always thinks about next generation.
The chemistry of Sheikh Hasina’s political success is love for the people, while people also love her due to her courage and honesty, he added.
Since return to the country, Sheikh Hasina has been maintaining two legacies — hierarchy of Bangabandhu in politics and freedom in economy, Quader said.
Quader thanked the sociology alumni association for intruding new scholarship ‘Martyr Sheikh Kamal and Martyr Sultana Kamal Memorial Scholarship’ for 10 meritorious students.
Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, principal secretary to the Prime Minister and also president of DUSAA, presided over the function while Secretary Md Kamal Sharif and Dean of Social Science Faculty Dr Sadeka Halim also spoke on the occasion.
