The leaders of Bangladesh Communist Party (CPB-Marxist) on Saturday urged the government to purchase paddy directly from farmers.
“Our farmers are frustrated as they aren’t getting fair price of their paddy. They aren’t even getting their production cost. The government must purchase paddy directly from farmers at Tk 1,200 per maund,” CPD General Secretary Dr MA Samad said at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital.
Samad, also coordinator of Ganatantrik Bam Oikya, claimed that farmers do not get fair prices because of corruption of government officials.
He also demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant’s corruption.
“There’s no implementation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s zero tolerance policy against corruption which is plaguing every sector. The government must punish the corrupt,” Samad added.
Sammobadi Party’s General Secretary Harun Chowdhury, Shahid Asad Parishad General Secretary Dr Shamshuzzaman Milon, CPB central leaders Saidur Rahman, Shamsul Haque, Mostafa Al Khalid Bin Mahmud, among others, were present.
