Punching machines fail to stop unauthorised students

In a bid to prevent unauthorised students from entering the central library of Dhaka University, the authority concerned has installed card punching machines.

Even though many days have passed since its installment, the punching machines had remained inoperative due to reasons unknown.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Prof. ASM Maksud Kamal said that no unauthorised students would be allowed to enter the central library from June 1 this year and no one would be allowed to study for the BCS examination there.

During a recent visit to the central library, this correspondent found that anyone can enter the central library without punching card or showing any kinds of documents to the gatemen. Besides, outsiders are seen entering the library through another gate.

When asked about entry of unauthorised students into the central library, Dr. Md. Nasir Uddin Munsi, librarian at the central library, said, “We have opened the second gate as we are repairing the first ones. As a result, students are using the back gate for the time being. Secondly, our VC has taken initiative to solve this problem by introducing the punching card system. But it will take a little more time to be operational.”

Professor Emeritus Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam said, “The initiative the VC has taken is definitely positive. It is a good initiative. To maintain discipline and enhance the opportunity for the current students, I think the decision taken by the authority should be implemented immediately. Because of unauthorised students, existing students don’t get scope to read in the central library.”

He also said, “If I specifically talk about unauthorised students, they come here just to study for the BCS exam. So, the authority should take steps to prevent them from entering the library.”

Despite efforts over phone several times, the vice- chancellor could not be reached for his comment in this regard.

As per University Order-1973, the students who have completed a course of study in the university and are eligible to appear at any university or government competitive examinations shall be permitted to use the university library.

Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam said every student who has completed his/her graduation can enter the library but they have to maintain procedure. “If they take permission to enter the library for research purpose or any serious issue, they can get in here,” he added.
