Country’s public universities are busy with the admission process of first year honours students for 2020-21 academic session.
However, the first year honours classes of Rajshahi University for 2020-21 academic session started from December 21 while Dhaka University is set to resume classes from January 16.
Besides, the first year honours classes of Jahangirnagar University are expected to begin in the next month or first week of March.
Apart from these, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is conducting the admission process now.
The students are being admitted in the first year honours course for 2020-21 academic session in the individual discipline of different schools.
“All admission seekers are being brought under dope test. We have introduced dope test system before admission of students to our university aiming to build an educated and healthy nation free from narcotics,” Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of SUST told reporters.
Chittagong University will begin its admission process for the academic session 2020-21 of honours first year from April 12 and it will continue till April 30.
As the public universities resumed physical classes since November last after nearly 18 months of Covid-19 forced closure, academic activities are going on in full swing now.
The authorities of all departments and institutes of all public universities are now taking classes alongside conducting admission process of first year honours students for 2020-21 academic session.
The students are being allowed to attend classes after showing the proof of receiving at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
The students are excited for being back to classrooms and seeing each other after a long time.
But as the World Health Organisation says the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is killing people across the globe and should not be dismissed as mild. Students, teachers and guardians feared about the uncertainty of the situation.
Talking to Bangladesh Post the students urged the university authorities to bring all students under Covid-19 vaccination to escape the virus infection newly, requesting the government to make the vaccination campaign at grassroots level available through community clinics.
The government has already given instruction that none could come to university without getting vaccinated.
“We have taken measures so that none is infected (with Coronavirus) again and none remains beyond vaccination coverage. The students will get the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine from Tuesday. Otherwise, they would not be allowed to attend classes,” the teacher told Bangladesh Post on Friday.
He said all concerned must carry out motivational campaign so that students receive vaccines immediately.
A group of students said residential halls are now crowded and a number of first year students will also be staying in the dormitories.
“Therefore, we all must maintain health guidelines and protocols. Besides, the cooperation of all concerned including active student organisations is expected to maintain a conducive learning atmosphere,” Samanta Samiha Raisa, a second year student of Anthropology Department of SUST told this correspondent.
