Underpass project at TT Para

Public suffering mounts for traffic congestion

Different development works have been continuing on TT Para Road in the capital for one and a half years, but delays in completing these projects are causing severe inconvenience to local residents, with traffic congestion becoming a common phenomenon.

Being a busy thoroughfare, it is an important road for both local and long-distance buses. With one side of the road closed for construction, the daily commute and routine activities of residents are being disrupted severely.

Local residents expressing their frustration said that the road becomes nearly impassable at times, prompting the authorities concerned to lay down brick soling as a temporary solution. However, this quick fix rarely lasts more than ten days.

According to them, various agencies are digging the road for their development activities, but no one takes responsibility for repairing it afterwards. This has created a cycle of disruption with no permanent

resolution in sight. According to sources, an underpass is being constructed under the Padma Rail Link Project at a cost of approximately Tk 100 crore. The underpass will stretch about 300 metres, connecting TT Para on Atish Dipankar Road to Outer Circular Road near Kamalapur.

The area has long suffered from frequent level crossings, which often result in vehicle stoppage and subsequent traffic jam.

Considering this, the authorities decided to replace the TT Para level crossing with an underpass to ease traffic congestion. Construction work on the underpass began in November 2022 under a Chinese contracting firm.

TT Para-Kamalapur Road remained closed for four months due to the construction of the six-lane underpass, leading to a permanent cessation of vehicular movement on TT Para Level Crossing Road.

Project sources indicated that the underpass would be completed by October, local residents said that traffic jam and roadblocks remain a daily occurrence, with no remedy in sight.

Due to political changeover, the construction work has witnessed a crawling pace which is not only delaying the completion of the construction work but also mounting the sufferings of local resident as well as commuters of different routes.
