Cop harasses woman for wearing teep

Progressive, cultural and independent-minded people of the country have raised their voices in protest against the harassment by a member of the police of a female teacher for wearing a teep in the capital Dhaka.

They took to the streets on Sunday demanding the arrest of that policeman and his exemplary punishment. 

Besides, renowned actress and lawmaker Suborna Mustafa also expressed outrage in the parliament on Sunday over the incident and she wanted to know in the parliament that "Where in the constitution, which law of Bangladesh says that a woman cannot wear a teep?

It has been known that a teacher of Tejgaon College named Lata Samaddar has complained that a policeman harassed and hurled abusive words at her after seeing a teep on her forehead while she was going to the campus Saturday morning.

When she protested, the policeman threatened her and tried to run her over with his motorbike, she alleged.

In a written complaint filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, Lata Samaddar, a lecturer of the college's Theatre and Media Studies Department, said the incident took place in front of Shezan Point shopping mall around 8:30am on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in protest against the incident people from all walks of life led by cultural and progressive-minded people came forward in protest against it. They took to the streets and held rallies and formed human chains demanding punishment for that policeman.    

Besides, renowned actress and lawmaker Suborna Mustafa expressed outrage in the parliament over the harassment.

"Where in the constitution, which law of Bangladesh says that a woman cannot wear a teep?" – Suborna questioned while placing a statement in the parliament.

She also demanded action against the accused policeman.

Suborna Mustafa termed it a heinous incident and repression on the women as well as the culture of the Bengali people.
