Protests erupt over controversial film on RG Kar Incident

Kolkata is in an uproar following the announcement of a short film based on the tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Titled "Agomoni: Tilottamader Golpo," the film was produced by Prantik Chakraborty and Rajanya Halder, student leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress party in West Bengal.

Scheduled for release on October 2, during Mahalaya, the film has drawn significant backlash. Even leaders within the Trinamool Congress have voiced objections, insisting that no film related to the R G Kar. incident should be released at this time. Despite requests to halt the film's premiere, the director and lead actress have refused to comply, stating that they intend to release it in its original form.

In response to the growing controversy, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh emphasised that the party has no connection to the film. He stated, “If anyone associated with the party uses this film for publicity regarding the ongoing investigation, we will not take responsibility. The party did not approve this film's production.”

Following Ghosh’s remarks, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad expelled the film’s producers, Chakraborty and Halder, from the party.

Tanhik is the vice-president of the state branch of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and also serves as vice-president of the Jadavpur-Diamond Harbour organisational district. The situation remains tense as protests continue over the film's release.
