At least 14 policemen were killed as protesters attacked two police stations in Sirajganj and Cumilla on Sunday.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Enamul Haque Sagor, spokesperson for the police headquarters (HQ), said that 13 policemen were killed in an attack on Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj, and a policeman of Eliotganj Highway police station was killed in Cumilla.
In Sirajganj, at least 13 policemen were killed in an attack on Enayetpur police station.
According to police sources, the protesters attacked the police station around 2:00 pm. During this time, a clash occurred between the police and the protesters. The protesters entered the station and beat 13 policemen to death.
A police source stated that the bodies of the deceased were lying scattered in front of and inside the
station. The bodies had not been recovered till filing of this report at 6:45 pm on Sunday.
It was reported from the Sirajganj police superintendent’s office that efforts were on to recover the bodies with police assistance from the district headquarters. The identities or ranks of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Bijoy Bosak, Additional DIG of Rajshahi Range, said that it was not known immediately who carried out the attack. The death toll might rise and efforts were being made to enter the area, but it had not been possible yet.
In Cumilla, police constable Ershad Ali was allegedly beaten to death at Eliotganj Highway police station on Sunday.
Witnesses said the attack on the Eliotganj Highway Police Station saw agitators assaulting the facility, causing many officers to seek refuge on the roof. Constable Ali, who failed to escape from the spot, was beaten to death.
Additional DIG of Highway Police Cumilla Region Khairul Alam confirmed the death of the constable.
Meanwhile, public relations department of the police headquarters said that terrorists attacked the police stations of Jatrabari and Khilgaon under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Gorai Highway police station in Tangail, Bogura Sadar, Dupchanchia, and Sherpur police stations, Naruli police outpost, Sadar police station in Joypurhat, Eliotganj Highway police station in Cumilla, Mithapukur, Pirgacha, Pirganj, Badarganj, and Gangachara in Rangpur, Sadar and Ashuganj police stations in Brahmanbaria, Enayetpur, Ullapara, and Shahjadpur police stations in Sirajganj, Madhabpur outpost in Habiganj, Mymensingh Range Office, police superintendent offices in Narayanganj, Bogura, Pabna, and Sirajganj, and Sadar police station in Dinajpur.
