Protesters demand justice for VP Nur

A group of students, teachers, politicians and journalists has staged a protest rally in the Dhaka University campus expressing their solidarity with Nurul Haque Nur and his associates who came under attack on Sunday. BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami backed Dhaka University teachers also formed a separate human chain in the campus to protest of the attack.

Nur, the Vice-President of the Dhaka University Central Student’s Union (DUCSU), and 22 others were injured in the attack allegedly carried out by Muktijuddho Mancha and Chhatra League activists at the DUCSU building. A case was filed on Tuesday against 30-35 leaders and activists of Muktijoddho Mancha, including central general secretary (GS) Al Mamun and its DU unit GS Yasir Arafat Turjo, for their alleged involvement in the attack.

Detectives detained two leaders of Muktijuddho Mancha – Al Mamun and Yasir Arafat Turjo –on Monday. The agitating students and teachers demanded justice for Nur. They also demanded resignation of the DU Proctor and immediate trail of the attackers. Former DUCSU VP ASM Abdur Rob, Mujahidul Islam Selim, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Aman Ullah Aman, Photo Journalist Shahidul Alam, Professor of Law of DU Tanzimuddin Khan, Convener of Gono Songhoti Junaid Saki, and Professor of Jahangir Nagar University expressed their solidarity with the protesting students.

They made three-point demand from the rally. Those include resignation of the DU proctor, releasing the CCTV footage during the attack, immediate trail and expulsion of the attackers. Prof Khan said the university authority did not take immediate steps when they came to know about the attack. He demanded immediate resignation of DU Proctor Golam Rabbani.

Professor of Law Asif Nazrul said:“Every citizen has the right to raise question and to criticize the government but no one have the right to attack them”. He also demanded punishment of the perpetrators.
