Students Against Disparity, a platform of general students, on Thursday said that their demand was fulfilled through reform of the quota system in government jobs.
“We took part in the countrywide movement since July 3 to establish our rights. A partial victory has been achieved as the government has issued a gazette notification on July 23 in the face of our logical movement,” Elian Kafi, one of the coordinators of the movement, said in a statement.
He also prayed for the salvation of departed souls of those students who were killed during the movement and wished quick recovery of those who were injured.
Placing a seven-point demand, he said that their main movement for the quota reform has been completed.
“We think that the expectations of the students have been fulfilled through it,” he added.
“The general students were not involved in acts of violence and Students Against Disparity does not support such kinds of activities,” the statement reads. The students do not have any
link with those who, under the banner of the platform, damaged public and private property to take political mileage, it said.
Kafi said that many innocent students became victims during the movement.
“We urge the government to bring those, who have applied force on the students, to book through an investigation. We also urge the government to provide appropriate compensation to the families of those students who were killed and ensure proper treatment for the injured,” he said in the statement.
He also demanded quick implementation of the notification, issued by the Dhaka University on July 23, for ensuring security to the students to establish peace on the campus and resuming the academic activities.
Demanding reopening of all the educational institutions, he also urged the government not to harass the students who carried out a non-violent movement and withdraw all the cases filed against them.
“We expect a positive step from the government in this regard,” said the statement, signed by 91 students of various universities.
