After receiving assurances from the administration, leaders and activists of various organizations protesting against the attack on the Hindu temples withdrew their programme from Shahbagh.
The protesters left the premises at 6.30 pm on Friday.
Earlier, after 4 pm, the protesters started chanting slogans and took the street at Shahbagh under their control disrupting movement of traffic in the area. At one stage, the traffic was brought to a halt and adjacent roads were jam-packed due to the protest rally.
Since 12 noon on Friday, various Hindu organizations had been protesting at the Shahbagh intersection in protest against the destabilization of communal harmony. After 4 pm, they blocked the road and sat down.
Upon receiving the news, senior police and RAB officials went to the spot, talked to the protesters and convincly removed them from the road.
However, President of Bangladesh Hindu Lawyers’ Parishad said that the protest would continue until their demands are not implemented. The protest would continue from 6am today (Saturday) indefinitely, he added.
After lifting the road blockade, the protesters marched from Shahbag to the National Press Club.
