The government has made a masterplan to develop Meherpur as a tourist center based on the Liberation War.
For this, the master plan will be prepared to develop Meherpur district in a planned manner.
In this regard, a project titled “Meherpur District Development Plan Formulation” has been proposed in the Planning Commission.
An official of the Planning Commission said that the total cost of implementing the project has been estimated at Tk 19.25 crore. It will be implemented by the Department of Urban Development of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works by December 2025 after receiving the approval, he mentioned.
According to the project proposal, Farhad Hossain, Member of Parliament of Meherpur-1 Constituency, wrote a letter on 12th June last year, mentioning some issues for the formulation of master plan of Meherpur district of his constituency.
It said that the Provisional Government was formed during the War of Independence in Mujibnagar Upazila of Meherpur District.
This government led the liberation war of 1971 and freed Bangladesh from the occupation and exploitation of the invading forces of Pakistan.
As a result, the contribution of Meherpur district to the map of this country is immense.
The Prime Minister of the development-friendly government has announced the establishment of an international standard tourism center based on the Liberation War of Mujibnagar.
For this reason, the possibilities of tourism development in the area centered on Mujibnagar have been created.
Along with the expansion or renovation of Mujibnagar Memorial in Meherpur district, the development activities of liberation war based tourism center, railway connection, road expansion, land port and check post, Sheikh Kamal IT training and incubation center, university, expatriate welfare bank, medical college and hospital, establishment of model mosque and so on are ongoing.
Meherpur district consists of only three upazilas (Meherpur Sadar, Mujibnagar and Gangni).
The total area of Meherpur district is 751.62 square kilometers. It also mentioned in the letter that the preparation of the master plan of Meherpur district is very important for the smooth implementation of the development activities of Meherpur district including Mujibnagar.
The main activities of the project are said to be physical feature survey, socio-economic survey, subsurface geotechnical study, transportation survey, baseline survey of existing fauna and flora and hydro-geological survey.
Besides, environmental survey and purchase of computer equipment and survey equipment ancillary work will be done.
According to the opinion of the Planning Commission, it is proposed to buy 6 computers and 3 laptops under the proposed project. Everyone in the project will work on additional responsibilities. Besides, computers or laptops have been purchased under various projects before. In that case, this number can be determined through discussion in the meeting.
