Professor A B M Obaidul Islam has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh Open University (BOU). The Ministry of Education issued a gazette notification on Thursday, September 12, following the President’s order.
Prof Obaidul Islam, a former teacher of the physics department at Dhaka University, will serve as the VC of BOU for the next four years from the date of his joining. As the chief executive officer of the university, he is expected to stay on the university campus full-time to carry out his duties.
According to the appointment rules, the President, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university, has the authority to cancel the appointment at any time if needed.
Prof Obaidul’s appointment comes at a time when BOU is focusing on enhancing its educational standards and expanding access to distance learning across the country. With his experience in teaching and administration, it is hoped that he will contribute to the growth and development of the university.
The new VC’s appointment follows the recent trend of bringing experienced academicians to lead public universities in Bangladesh. Prof Obaidul’s background in physics and his experience at Dhaka University make him a suitable choice to lead BOU, one of the largest open universities in the country.
