Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal has taken the charge as 29th vice chancellor of Dhaka University.
He took charge at the VC office of the university at 9:00am on Saturday.
The outgoing VC Professor Dr Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman and Pro-VC (admin) Professor Dr Muhammad Samad along with other faculty members of the university welcomed the new vice chancellor with flowers at the time.
After assuming office, the new DU VC along with other teachers and officials of the university placed a wreath at the portraitof Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the city.
On October 15, President Mohammed Shahabuddin, also the chancellor of the university, appointed Professor Maksud Kamal as the VC of the university.
Dr Maksud Kamal, a professor of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Department, has been serving Dhaka University as the pro-VC (education) since June 2020.
Last year, he also got appointed as a visiting professor at the UK's prestigious University College London (UCL) with a tenure of five years-- April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2027.
Professor Maksud Kamal commenced his career as a lecturer at the Geology Department of Dhaka University in March 2000 and was promoted as professor in the same department in 2010. Before joining the university, he served as a scientific officer at the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARSO) for nearly six years.
Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal was elected dean of the earth and environmental sciences faculty in 2012. He was elected president of the Dhaka University Teachers Association four consecutive times.
He was also the convener of Blue Panel, the Awami League-backed teacher organisation at the university, and a member of the senate and syndicate of the university, as well as the provost of Surja Sen Hall for two terms.
Apart from this, he is the president of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association.
