Former chairman of Daulatdia Union Parishad and former general secretary of Upazila Awami League Nurul Islam Mandal. 50, has died at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar on Monday. He is survived by two wives, a son and a daughter, as well as numerous political colleagues and well-wishers.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment when he suddenly fell ill around 8 pm on Sunday.
It is learned that he was scheduled to contest the by-election for the post of chairman of Goalanda Upazila Parishad on October 10.
Nurul Islam Mandal had been suffering from various complex diseases including liver problems for several days.
According to family sources, he was also present along with former state minister for education Kazi Keramat Ali, MP of Rajbari-1 constituency, at a distribution program of tree saplings at various educational institutions organized by Goaland Upazila administration on Sunday. But there he suddenly fell ill. He was rushed to the Upazila Parishad chairman's office. When he recovered, he was taken home.
He fell ill again in the evening and was rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar in critical condition.
It may be mentioned that Nurul Islam Mandal was a former member of Ward No. 5 of Daulatdia Union Parishad. After that he was elected president of Daulatdia Union Awami League and chairman of Union Parishad. He was later elected general secretary of Goaland Upazila Awami League.
A few years ago, Nurul Islam was shot by the terrorists, but he survived because of the emergency treatment. But since then he has been suffering from a number of serious problems.
Various political leaders including Rajbari-1 MP and former state minister for education Kazi Keramat Ali, Rajbari district Awami League general secretary Kazi Iradat Ali have expressed their condolences over his death.
