The Shimulia-Kanthalbari ferry service has resumed after being closed for three days. Priority is being given to private vehicle crossings. Twelve ferries have been busy crossing since Friday morning.
Meanwhile, goods trucks waiting to cross Shimulia were allowed from 11pm on Thursday to Friday morning. Small vehicles and passengers are being passed on priority basis so as not to create congestion.
Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Abdul Momen said no large public transport would operate. Those who want to go home on Eid will be able to go, but will have to maintain the hygiene rules. They cannot rush and the checkposts are on high alert.
Shafiqul Islam, AGM of BIWTC in Shimulia, said there were about 150 trucks and 50 small vehicles at the ghat. There is no crowd of people. The pressure is relatively low.
The ferry service on Shimulia-Kanthalbari route was completely stopped from 3pm on Monday. Authorities stopped the ferry service to prevent the transmission of corona when the influx of homebound people turned into a sea of people for several days in a row. Besides, all the vessels including launches, speedboats and trawlers have been closed on this route since March 26.
