Professor Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), has made a startling discovery: during the last two years, the prices of basic necessities have increased by an astounding 50%.
Speaking at a debate competition organised by Debate for Democracy at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) on Saturday, Dr Rahman highlighted a critical disparity between official inflation rates and the real cost of living.
He explained that while the average inflation rate is reported to be between 10 and 12 percent, the prices of everyday essentials have soared by 50 percent.
For instance, an item that previously cost Tk 100 has now risen to Tk 150.
Dr Rahman also commented on the broader socio-economic implications, noting that the recent job quota reform movement, which initially aimed to address employment issues, has also underscored wider economic inequalities, drawing widespread participation from various sectors of society.
