Following the unabated price hike of vegetables, rice, and edible oil, this week prices of fish and chicken have also gone high compared to last week.
Traders said, as supply of fish decreases in winter and price of hilsa fish increases, prices of other fishes also go up. On the other hand, broiler chicken price rises by Tk 10 per kilogram (kg).
However, consumers are unwilling to agree with sellers’ arguments. They said, until the government identifies the unholy nexus behind the price spiral, market situation will continue to remain unstable.
Visiting different kitchen markets in the capital on Friday, such price update trend information was collected from wholesalers and retailers.
It was learned that, even winter vegetables have started arriving in good quantities, price is still higher like past week. Carrot, tomato, bean, bitter gourd, brinjal and string bean are selling at Tk 100 per kg each. The prices of other vegetables are also very high, climbing to reach three digits.
Among the vegetables, brinjal is selling at Tk 80 to Tk 110 per kg, sponge gourd at Tk 50, string bean at Tk 60, parwal at Tk 60, tomato at Tk 120 to Tk 140 and carrot at Tk 80 to Tk 120 and green chili is selling at Tk 180 per kg.
On the other hand, papaya is selling at Tk 40, okra at Tk 80, bean at Tk 90, and bitter gourd at Tk 70 per kg, cauliflower and cabbage Tk 50 per piece, and gourd Tk 60 per piece.
Until now, potato and onion are not selling as per the government-fixed prices. Despite the government's two- time potato price fixing, potato is selling at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg, while local onions are being sold at Tk 80 to 90 per kg in the market. Imported large onion is being selling at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg.
Rampura Kitchen Market's vegetable trader Ibrahim told The Bangladesh Post that, "As usual still supply is not adequate against local demand. We hope soon the supply will come to normal position and price will fall automatically."
On the other hand, broiler chicken price rise is slightly higher than past week. Broiler chicken is selling at Tk 140 to Tk 145 per kg, local chicken per kg is Tk 550, Sonali chicken is Tk 250 to Tk 270 per kg. On the other hand, beef is selling at Tk 600 and mutton at Tk 800 per kg.
In the fish market, it was found that, fish prices have also gone high compared to previous week. Per kg hilsa is selling at Tk 900 to Tk 1000, while medium and low quality hilsa is selling at lower price.
On the other hand, Chital fish was selling at Tk 500-550 per kg, Awn fish at Tk 650-700, Rohi is at Tk 280-350 per kg, Katla at Tk 180-350, Tilapia sold at Tk 120-180, Boal fish at Tk 700-900, Pangas is sold at Tk 150-180, Pabda sold at Tk 280 to Tk 350, and Shing sold at Tk 250 to Tk 600 (based on quality and size).
