Although all the factories in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila's Char Muktarpur were closed as per the government instructions, Premier Cement kept the factories open on the first day of the strict lockdown and worked with the workers.
A mobile court on Friday fined Premier Cement Tk 1 million and sentenced the company's manager (administration) Nazrul Islam to six months in jail for forcing workers to come to work in Munshiganj and violating strict government restrictions.
Executive Magistrate and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hamidur Rahman of the mobile court handed down the fine and imprisonment on Friday evening.
Giving this information, Additional Magistrate (ADM) of the district Shilu Roy said, one more month imprisonment will be given for non-payment of fine. The factory will remain sealed for the next 13 days.
It is known that at 10:30 am on Friday, while working in the Premier Cement factory located in West Muktarpur of Munshiganj city, Md. A worker named Shahabul (38) died. As the factory was kept open in the lockdown, the mobile court raided the factory in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Premier Cement Mills Limited had instructed the workers to return to work by 6 am on July 23 after the Eid holiday. The notice further said that the company would be forced to take strict action against them if they did not join the workplace by 6 am on July 23.
